Support a Catholic Podcaster Month
Beginning November 1, I would like to encourage as many people as possible to vote for Catholic podcasts over at podcastalley.com.  The way it works is that you can vote for as many podcasts as you would like, but you can only vote once monthly for each podcast.   It is my hope that we can have all Catholic Podcasts in the top 20 in the religion and spirituality category and maybe can get a few in the overall top 10 on podcastalley.com.   This simple effort has the potential to increase the profile of Catholic podcasts and expose them to a much larger audience.  And if you are feeling generous, you can vote for the Catholic Roundup as well.

Testing a cool Catholic WordPress Extension

Over on OpensourceCatholic.com I made acquaintance with  Pistos, a Catholic, Canadian musician, open-source advocate, and linux junkie.  I thought Blaise Alleyne and I were the only two people that fit that description.

Pistos has developed the  Catholic Reference Extension for WordPress.  It magically makes scripture and Catechism references pop up the actual bible or Catechism text.

This post is mostly so I can test it out.  If you type in a reference to the Catechism of the Catholic Church like:

  • CCC 185 -187

or a scripture reference like:

  • John 3:16

it should automagically bring up a box with the referenced text when you mouse over it.  The Scripture popup works fine for me but the Catechism reference posts the whole text of the catechism reference at the bottom of each post and plays a little bit of havoc with my blog layout.  I will monkey with it a bit more and update this post later.

Update:

I contacted Pistos through his IRC channel and he checked out the site.  He said he found a bug in the drop shadows routine and had me turn off drop shadows in the Catholic Reference Extension settings.  Works like a charm now.   He tells me that he will be fixing the bug and releasing an new version of the plugin soon.  I love the Internet and open source software.  When I had a difficulty with a free plugin the volunteer author personally helped to troubleshoot it.  Kind of like we are both part of some universal community of brothers and sisters united by our common faith…

Wait…

Exactly like that.

Check out the  Catholic Reference Extension .  It’s a great tool for Catholic Bloggers.

Thanks Pistos

Catholic Roundup Digest 3- October 23

Hello I’m Sean McGaughey from CatholicRoundup.com.
During this Marian month of October, there are a number of online initiatives calling Catholics to grown in their faith in Christ by increasing their devotion to Mary.
Greg and Jennifer Willits are asking Supporters of the Rosary Army apostolate to join them in a novena to St. Maximillian Kolbe ending on November 1, the Feast of All Saints.  St Maximillian had a strong devotion to Mary and was largely responsible for the modern revival of consecration to Jesus through Mary.  Greg and Jennifer  have a podcast series preparing people for Total Consecration at totalconsecration.com. The Apostolate for Family Consecration also provides a free program for family consecration based on the teachings of St Louis de Montefort, St Maximillian Kolbe, and Pope John Paul II which includes ebooks, videos and audio reflections at  Familyland.org. They invite families to join them in a 40 day preparation for family consecration  beginning on November 5 and culminating on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

I’m going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come.  … Well actually I’m not but from November 18-21 over 20,000 young Catholics from across the United States will be gathering in Kansas City for The National Catholic Youth Conference.  Catholic Roundup favorites Popple and Bryan Murdaugh both have new CDs that they will be launching at the conference.  If like me you’ve been young for too long to be considered a youth, or you cannot make it to Kansas City, the folks at NCYC and mycatholicvoice.com have created an online Virtual Pilgrimage.  They have podcasts, videos, free music, and guides to help people prepare to make the most of their experience. They also have a video contest running until November 8.  They are asking Catholics young and old to submit videos on 1 of 3 themes– Christ Reigns, Prayer forms, and Environmental Justice.  You can begin your virtual pilgrimage at www.mycatholicvoice.com/ncyc .

For most Catholic podcasters and bloggers, creating new media is a labour of love. Beginning November 1, I would like to encourage as many people as possible to vote for Catholic podcasts over at podcastalley.com.  The way it works is that you can vote monthly for each podcast you like on Podcast Alley.  It is my hope that we can have all Catholic Podcasts in the top 20 in the religion and spirituality category and maybe can get a few in the overall top 10 on podcastalley.comThis simple effort has the potential to increase the profile of Catholic podcasts and expose them to a much larger audience.

Support a Catholic Speaker Month– Greg and Jennifer Willits

Greg and Jennifer Willits

Greg and Jennifer Willits

Matthew Warner of Tweetcatholic and Flocknote has declared October as  Support a Catholic Speaker Month.  He is hoping to find 101 bloggers to each write about one of  101 Catholic speakers before October 20.  Head on over to Fallibleblogma.com for more details and to see the list as it takes shape, or to sign up to write your own article about a Catholic Speaker.  I quickly jumped into the fray and signed up to do a profile on Greg and Jennifer Willits

In the summer of 2005, I bought an Mp3 player and started looking for music and podcasts to fill it. At that time I discovered Father Roderick and The Catholic Insider then the Rosary Army Podcast .  My first reaction to discovering Catholic podcasts online was that it was a source for catholic culture online.  I beganlistening to the weekly (then biweekly) episodes of the Rosary Army Podcast as Greg and Jennifer shared bits about their life raising a family, their day to day challenges with work, their apostolate to give away all twine knotted rosaries, and their Catholic faith.  Their banter and stories were often hilarious, and their shows often contained funny little song parodies and sketches, including the now infamous, ‘Captain Catechism’.

After a while I introduced my wife and daughter to the Rosary Army Podcast, and we would listen to Greg and Jennifer’s newest podcasts together as soon as they became available.  I began to get involved on the Rosary Army forums and learned to make and pray all twine knotted rosaries.  Then I realized that podcasting is a 2-way conversation and started to send feedback first to the Rosary Army and then to my other favorite podcasts.

Over the course of the Rosary Army podcast, Greg and Jennifer have shared the good times and bad times of their life.  They have shared their joys and sorrows: miscarriages,  their frustrations at getting educational support for their children, unsuccessfully trying to sell their home to several episodes dedicated to Greg’s parent’s 50th anniversary.  In an early Rosary Army podcast, Greg also told a hilarious story about getting lost in the Georgia backwoods on his way to a youth retreat to teach teens how to make all twine rosaries.  The Rosary Army Podcast was ultimately about a couple deeply in love with each other, deeply committed to their family and uncompromising about their faith.

Through their example, Greg and Jennifer inspired a community of online Catholics.  Several years ago Father Roderick Vonhogen invited them to join his SQPN podcast network.  After about a year with SQPN , Greg and Jennifer went full time with their ministries at SQPN and the Rosary Army.   They spent 2 years working full time with SQPN, managing the day to day affairs of both apostolates, producing That Catholic Show, and organizing the first Catholic New Media Celebration.

Last year, Greg and Jennifer were offered the opportunity to host a daily 3 hour show, The Catholics Next Door,  on The Catholic Channel on Sirus XM radio.  This offered them an incredible opportunity to reach a much larger audience as well as having more security to provide for their family.  We were greatly saddened when they discontinued the Rosary Army podcast but about 6 months into their new show, they started releasing a weekly 30 minute podcast of highlights from their radio show, so you can still find them on the internet.

Back to Greg and Jennifer’s impact on me and my family. They showed Catholics that we can reach out and find community across great distances using the new media.  They let us glimpse into their lives, into the challenges of having a family and running a world wide ministry from a small closet/office (dubbed the Cloffice) in their home.  Most of all they challenged their listeners to deepen their own faith, to grow in holiness.  I started listening to their podcast as a Catholic who was thirsting for more.  Gradually I began contributing to their community with silly voice feedbacks, song parodies, and tying and giving away rosaries. I now find myself in my own spare room, producing a website and podcast and reaching out to others who are trying to answer Pope John Paul II’s call to a New Evangelization using the tools of new media.

I think that Greg and Jennifer’s special gift, which they express both on the radio and in person, is that they present themselves as an ordinary married couple with an ordinary family and ordinary struggles of their daily lives.  They truly are The Catholics Next Door.   However, by making themselves open to the call of the Holy Spirit and by diving deep into their faith, they are showing all of us that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things for God.   By virtue of our baptism, that is a call that we all share.

Don’t worry friends.  We haven’t forgot about the podcast. We’ve been very busy with work and family commitments this month. However, we have a bit of podcast goodness for you.  We have been experimenting with a 3 minute condensed version of the Catholic Roundup.  Last week I sent it out to a bunch of podcast producers for their feedback and Jim O’Meira picked it up as a weekly feature on The Catholic Music Express Podcast.  We are hoping that it helps fulfil our newly minted mission statement, “To support and encourage Catholics who are endeavoring to use new media tools to spread the Good News.”  Other podcasters are very welcome to include the Catholic Roundup Digest in their own podcasts.  And don’t forget about our Catholic Media Promo bank, a repository of promos for Catholic bloggers, podcasts, and musicians.  We hope to make it easier for podcasters to find and play promos for other Catholic podcasts.

Congratulations to Inge Loots for producing an audio version of the liturgy of the hours in dutch for over one year.  You can find her English Podcast, a A journey into the Land of the Spirit at taquoriaan.com

Last month I came upon the Why I am Catholic blog.  I’ve quickly become a fan of Webster Bull’s masterful imagery and warm persona.  He’s a great writer.

Last week on Tweetcatholic.com I found out about a new Catholic podcast with the best name:What would Jesus Podcast? Three young adults from Texas, Abbey, Brian and Kelly talk about our Catholic faith from a young adult’s perspective.

Matthew Warner  is still looking for a few more bloggers to writer about their favorite Catholic Speaker for Support a Catholic Speaker Month.  He is hoping to find 101 bloggers to each write about one of  101 Catholic speakers before October 20.  Head on over to Fallibleblogma.com for more details and to see the list as it takes shape.

Last week we were inspired by Susan Bailey and the mission statement on the Grapevine Website to draft a mission statement for the Catholic Roundup. The process of praying about and writing a mission statement helped us greatly to define the focus of our online ministry.  Now I have a bit of a challenge for other  Catholic bloggers, podcasters and musicians:  “What is your mission statement?”

Background music for this week’s Catholic Roundup Digest is an instrumental track of T-Fig and the party from Popple’s new album, Hip Hip Hooray, due to be released on October 20.  You can find them at popple.us.

Catholic Roundup Mission Statement

My family and I have been deeply nourished and have grown together a much deeper faith in our Lord Jesus Christ through our participation in the online Catholic Community.  It has always been our goal to help promote and celebrate online Catholic Community.  Over the past several months it has grown clear to me that we needed to clearly define our focus.  After all, Jeff Young is The Catholic Foodie, Paul Camarata of the Saintcast is the Saint guy, Jeff Miller is the Curt Jester, and Father Jay is the iPadre, bringing us ‘All things Catholic and then some’.  I strive to be “That Catholic New Media Guy”, but so is everybody else in the new media space.  What is it exactly what differentiates our growing online ministry from other people answering the call to spread the Good News using the Internet modern multimedia tools?

Last week I was surprised by Susan Bailey’s announcement that after 10 years she had handed over the reins of Grapevine online to the capable hands of Jim O’Meira and Rob Ayoub, from The Catholic Music Express Podcast.  On her podcast she she felt that it was an important part of her music ministry to “Support and Encourage other Catholic Musicians”.  On the Grapevine Website there is a lovely mission statement that describes that their purpose is.

When I heard Susan’s words and read the Grapevine mission statement,  I cried, “Eureka!  That is exactly what we are trying to do!”, in my head.  Building upon their inspiration, here is a mission statement for the Catholic Roundup.

  1. To support and encourage Catholics who are endeavoring to use new media tools to spread the Good News.
  2. To always work for the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ through the intercession of His Blessed Mother.

We endeavour to carry out this role by:

  • participating the online Catholic Community, educating others, and offering to act as facilitators in the online Catholic Community.
  • helping other with their online endeavors by promoting their projects, by participating in their communities and playing in their sandboxes.  It is our firm belief that everyone benefits when we support each other.  A rising tide floats all ships.
  • help others achieve excellence in using new media tools.
  • helping to unite and cross-pollinate the various disciplines within the online Catholic community, ie bloggers, podcasters, musicians, social media junkies and web developers.
Now that I’ve finally figured out how to explain what it is that we do here at the Catholic Roundup, now it’s your turn.  Whether you are a blogger, podcaster, site developer, musician or just a participant in the online Catholic community, What is your ‘mission statement’?
