November 30- A Catholic Roundup Advent with RAnn

November 30- Catholic New Media Advent

Last Year on  Day 2 of A Catholic New Media Advent Calendar.  RAnn from This That and the Other Thing was our first guest with a list of  Advent Links for Children 2008.  She is back again with a list of this year’s Advent for Families with Children.  Thanks again Ruth Ann.

As noted in the sticky post at the top of my blog, I’m participating the the Catholic New Media Advent Wreath project put together by Catholic Roundup. If you aren’t familiar with Catholic Roundup, it is a site devoted to linking Catholics to the best of what the internet offers on Catholicism, be that podcasts, videos, websites, blogs….

Children love to celebrate and love to make things. To make Advent a family celebration and to give the kids preparation for Christmas beyond buying and wrapping gifts, check out these links. If you have favorite Advent sites for kids which are not listed, leave them in the comments section.

Many of the publishers of religion texts have websites with further activities. Catechetical Resources, put out by the publishers of the Faith and Life religion books, has activities for all grade levels, including instructions for making Advent Wreaths, coloring sheets and study guides.

Sadlier, publisher of the We Believe religion series has Advent activities for all ages.

CatholicMom.com has art projects, coloring sheets, games and even some recipes. They have more under lesson plans. Catholic Advent is an old site and most of the links are bad, so skip them, but try the activities. This site, filled with preschool activities, gives instructions for an Advent Wreath craft and lesson. Here is another Advent Wreath craft, with prayers, and here are different directions for a traditional Advent Wreath.

Most kids love to help in the kitchen and the Catholic Cuisine blog has recipes that carry you through the liturgical year. See what they are cooking up for Advent.

Part of a large site by a Passionist, here are Advent prayers for children.

Sign up for Holy Heros and your kids can get daily emails of Advent activities.

Creighton University reminds parents that the most important thing to do to prepare children for Advent is for parents to prepare themselves. However, they provide several family Advent activities.

Here is the Jesse Tree my family and I are using. We got if via the Advent Calendar featured at the top of my blog.

There is no way anyone could have time to try all the ideas on Catholic Culture. A blog called Nettacow gives a bunch of links
Of course the most necessary part of celebrating Advent is celebrating Sunday mass with the community. The web gives us lots of resources to help children understand the weekly readings. The publishers of the Faith First religion texts have weekly summaries, discussion topics and activities based on the readings. Sadlier has a similar site. Catholic Mom.com has coloring pages, worksheets, lesson plans, and more for each week. Open Wednesday has a variety of activities as well.

Join us tomorrow and every day until December 26 for more reflections produced by great Catholic New Media personalities.

Welcome to the Catholic New Media Advent Calendar. Starting November 29, and every day until Boxing Day on December 26, we will feature content from a different Catholic blogger, author, podcaster or musician. Come back often. (If the doors on todays date don’t seem to be working, try refreshing the frame by right clicking on the calendar and reloading the frame).

If you are a Catholic blogger, podcaster, artist, author or musician who would like to contribute to the Advent Calendar, send us a message at catholicroundup@gmail.com. We would love to feature all kinds of Catholic media in the advent calendar, from blog posts, to visual art, to music, and videos.

Throughout the month, all the content on the Calendar will be featured on the blog at catholicroundup.com. You can subscribe to the feed of the Catholic New Media Roundup at http://feeds.feedburner.com/CatholicNewMediaRoundup.

Please feel free to embed Catholic New Media Advent Calendar on your website. This sets up a 420X700 frame on your webpage containing the advent calendar. As I update and modify the calendar throughout advent, it should magically change within the frame. You can copy and paste the HTML embed code in the box below.

If you would rather just link back to this calendar page, I have created a couple of badges suitable for blog posts or sidebars. Choose the size you want then cut and paste the code below into your site to link back to the original image. I will update the images throughout advent and they will magically change on your site as well as the advent season progresses.

Embed Codes Update
Displaying code in a blog page is tricky because some browsers (particularly IE 6) sees it as html code and renders it even if you don’t want it to.

Here are some links to text files containing the embed codes which should work.

Support a Catholic Speaker Month and Best Catholic Speaker 2009 Results

"In October, Matthew Warner of Tweetcatholic and Flocknote has asked over  100 bloggers to write about one of  101.  I participated in this effort with a profile of Greg and Jennifer Willits from the Rosary Army.   and The Catholics Next Door,  on The Catholic Channel on Sirus XM radio. Matthew Warner has now posted the results of Support a Catholic Speaker Month on Fallibleblogma.com.  Head on over there to find out about some great Catholic bloggers and speakers.  When I reviewed the list, I discovered some great Catholic blogs and podcasts that I was not familiar with.

Support a Catholic Podcaster in November

Over at FallibleBlogma.com, Matthew Warner is just wrapping up a very successful Support a Catholic Speaker Month, where nearly 100 Catholic bloggers submitted profiles for 100 Catholic speakers.

I would like to declare November as:  Support a Catholic Podcaster month.   For most Catholic podcasters and bloggers, creating new media is a labour of love. We gain much satifaction from the comments and feedback of our listeners, and by the support of our listeners in helping grow our audience by recommending it to others.  Voting for a podcast on podcastalley.com has proven to be a very effective means for helping a podcast reach a larger audience.  Beginning November 1, I would like to encourage as many people as possible to vote for Catholic podcasts over at podcastalley.com.  The way it works is that you can vote for as many podcasts as you would like, but you can only vote once monthly for each podcast.   It is my hope that we can have all Catholic Podcasts in the top 20 in the religion and spirituality category and maybe can get a few in the overall top 10 on podcastalley.com.   This simple effort has the potential to increase the profile of Catholic podcasts and expose them to a much larger audience.  And if you are feeling generous, you can vote for the Catholic Roundup as well.
To vote for a podcast on Podcast Alley, you need to give them an email address.  They will email you a confirmation link, which you have to click on to confirm your vote.  If you don’t get the confirmation email, check your spam folder.

To make it easier to vote for podcasts on podcast alley, you can register for a free account on podcast alley.  Once you are logged into podcast alley, you do not have to go through the email confirmation step when you vote.

For your voting convenience, here is a list of Podcast Alley Voting links for a number of Catholic Podcasts.  Clicking on these links will take you directly to the Podcast alley voting page.  If you know of a Catholic Podcast which is not on this list, send me a link to its podcast alley profile page or its podcast alley id# and I will add it to the list.
Happy voting.
