Tis the season to be jolly. Every good Christmas celebration needs music and there is a ton of great Christmas music available for free on the Internet. When I began compiling this post it was to showcase free Christmas music specifically by Catholic musicians, but I kept finding more great Christmas music all over the net. As I was finding more and more sources for ‘free Chrismas music’. I was also struck my the many motivations that artists have for releasing some (or all) of their music for free. For some it is a promotional tool, for others a gift to the world, for others a philosphical and political act. As I list the free music, I will also try to explain what the artist means when they say it is ‘free’.
The other day, I was thrilled to discover that True North Records, Borealis Records and Linus Entertainment, have teamed up to offer free music to help promote some legendary Canadian musicians. They offer selected free tracks from artists such as Bruce Cockburn, Ashley McIsaac, Downchild, Colin Linden and Stephen Fearing. I was thrilled to find Bruce Cockburn’s version of Silent Night from his wonderful Christmas album. Their terms for these tracks are: “All the Mp3s on this page contain no DRM and can be dowloaded for free and can be shared via p2p, blogs and social networks and used for any non commercial purpose on a royalty-free basis, including podcasting. Please share with your friends. Add to your ipod, website, blogs, social networks & playlists. Thank you for helping us spread the noise about these artists”. It is incredibly refreshing to see indie record companies who are using the internet and new media to find new promotional and business opportunities for musicians rather than railing against the new technologies.
Now on to the Catholic musicians…
Toronto blogger, musician, software developer and copyfighter Blaise Alleyne has released his arrangements and recordings of public domain Christmas Music back into the public domain under a CC0 dedication, waiving all his copyright claims to both the recordings and arrangements.
Karl Kohlhaseoffers several albums for free download on his website, including the Christmas album, He is Born. Here are Karl’s license restrictions from his website: “You may burn as many copies of the CDs as you like for family and friends. I only ask that you give them away free of charge. Freely you have received, so freely give…”
Bob Rice offers a number of free downloads on his website. Bob writes, ” Sometimes a 30 second sample doesn’t cut it. Here’s the full version of some of Bob’s most popular and favorite songs. If you want to save it, right click on the name of the song and choose “Save As”. And if you’d like to buy it, you can get it off iTunes or purchase the CD here.” The closest one to a Christmas song is HERALD OF THE GREAT KING from “Behold the Lamb” (web exclusive)
Poppleis pretty cool with people sharing their music with their friends if they have bought the CD. They also have some swell package deals on their website for people wishing to buy Popple CDs for their friends and family. Over the past two years, both Dan and Kyle from Popple have recorded original songs for the Catholic New Media Advent Calendar.
The following are posted as free downloads by the artists– I’m unsure of the licensing. It would be safe to assume that they are free for personal use and all other rights are reserved.
L’Angelus, an amazing Cajun family band from Louisiana is offering a free download of your choice from their Christmas album if you sign up for their mailing list.
If you know of other Catholic musicians offering free downloadable Christmas music, let me know and I will add them to the list.

We are pleased to announce that we have set up the Catholic Media Promo Bank. This page is a repository of all the Catholic podcast and blog promos, flyers, etc that I can get my hands on. This could be a useful resource for podcasters who wish to play Catholic podcast promos, or for podcast listeners who wish to find new podcasts.
Our goal at the Catholic Roundup has always been to help Catholics using new media to spread the Good News and to help other Catholics to find great Catholic resources online. If you have questions about setting up your Catholic blog or podcast, we are happy to help out.
A 1-3 minute audio promo is a great way to spread word about your podcast, blog or web resource. Podcasters are a sociable bunch and they are usually quite happy to play promos for other podcasts. A bit of your show music with some clips or a description of your show along with the website address are a good start. You can hear a promo for our show at http://www.cc.ductapeguy.net/40days/CNMRPromo.mp3 .
Here are their guidelines adapted for my purposes.
PODCAST PROMO
Please attach a promo of no more than 120 seconds in the following
format: MP3, 44.1KHz, 128-bit (stereo or mono)
Once ready, please email your submission to (catholicroundup@gmail.com) catholicroundup (at) gmail (dot) com
with the subject “PROMO: Your Show Name”.
AUDIO PROFILE
The Canadian Podcast Buffet also does something called an Audio Profile which I have adapted here.
Please attach an audio profile of no more than 120 seconds in the following format: MP3, 44.1KHz, 128-bit (stereo or mono)
When you start your audio response to these questions, please follow this format..

It would be wonderful if members of the online Catholic community could arrange their summer vacations in 2010 to spend a week at a Holy Family Fest at Familyland. We will try to help coordinate this.

Song: People are Going to San Antone: Video on Youtube
I wrote this parody to help promote the Catholic New Media Celebration on June 27, 2009 in San Antonio, Texas ( http://celebration.sqpn.com ). Adam Hendey helped out on flute recorded by his mom, Lisa Hendey ( http://new.catholicmom.com ). Dan Harms from Popple provide a tasty guitar solo. ( http://popple.us ). My always supportive wife and daughter make cameo appearances in the video.
Cannonball Awards: at the Crescat during the 2009 Cannonball Awards, as races are close in several categories. And the Catholic New Media Awards are accepting nominations as well. There’s even a third competition underway, one specifically for Eastern Christian Rite blogs.
“Mary Moments” are back and will honor motherhood — and all parenthood — on Monday, May 25 at Just Another Day of Catholic Pondering. The carnival will include a Mr. Linky or you’ll be welcome to share in the comments if you don’t have a blog or a website.

Yesterday, my family made the 230 km trek down to Toronto to Participate in St. Paul in the Square, a day of prayer, music, scripture study and a celebration of our Catholic faith. There was praise and worship music led by the Susan Hookong-Taylor and Ana Dacosta Band, and the amazing Matt Maher. Archbishop Thomas Collins led the assembled crowd through a Lectio Divina on Acts 17:16-34, where St. Paul was sharing the Good News in the marketplace in Athens. It was a very fitting choice of scripture for the setting as we were all in the midst of the public square in the heart of downtown Toronto. Archbishop Collin’s reflections were accompanied by the sounds of the city- drummers busking across the street, a group Harley’s roaring away from the Hard Rock Cafe, and sirens of passing fire trucks. Prior to his talk, Archbishop Collins mingled with the crowd in the square. My daughter introduced herself to him and told him about her first communion. He gave her a special blessing.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so here is a slideshow of my pictures from St. Paul in the Square.
Today, Father Roderick and the SQPN network closed their annual fund raising drive with a 12 hour podcast marathon. I thought I would surprise Father Roderick with something special. The Catholic New Media Celebration will be held this year in San Antonio, Texas on June 27. I’m still unable to go but it will be an amazing event. To help promote the CNMC, I wrote and recorded a parody called, ‘People are going to San Antone’ with the help of Adam Hendey on flute (recorded by his mother Lisa Hendey the Catholic Mom), and Dan Harms of Popple on Lead Guitar.
