Like many podcasters I use the popular Podpress plugin to manage my podcast files and create the podcast and Itunes ready RSS feeds for the Catholic new Media Roundup. However, last summer the WordPress 2.6 update broke podpress and the maintainer has yet to provide an update. Like many podcasters, I have been relying on unofficial patches to keep things running. But today, it broke. I have switched to another podcasting plugin called the Blubrry Powerpress plugin. It seems to be working. Unfortunately, it changed the address of my podcast feed that is sent to the Itunes store, so I took advantage of the change to switch my feed in the Itunes store to my feed to my feedburner feed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/CatholicNewMediaRoundup. Unfortunately, if you are subscribed through the Itunes store, it may take several days (weeks) for it to update there. For uninterrupted enjoyment of the Catholic New Media Advent Calendar, check your feedreader or podcatcher and make sure you are subscribed to

http://feeds.feedburner.com/CatholicNewMediaRoundup.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Now on to more great Advent reflections.

For the past several month, Bryan Murdaugh has been presenting a monthly online virtual house concert on Ustream.tv. This month’s concert is Tomorrow, November 19, 2008 at 8pm EST. You can find it at http://www.ustream.tv/murdaugh. I will be doing an opening set for Bryan beginning at a little after 7:35pm EST at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ductapeguy-live.

Edit: You can view the concert here now. I had a couple of technical difficulties with my camera but I enjoyed being in the supporting spot for my friend Bryan, and he truly rawked the ustream

Free Videos by Ustream.TV

Online video chat by Ustream
That was fun but I had quite a fight with my cameras and audio devices to get them working, then my camera crapped out in the middle of the first song. Fortunately, I had another camera ready to roll, so I just switched over, but my backup camera is of considerably lower quality. I’ll definitely keep doing this ustream thing from time to time. I think I’ll be able to work the kinks out.

After 8 months and 10 shows (or 44 if you count the 40 days of Catholic Media during lent), my wife and I thought it was time for the Catholic New Media Roundup to have it’s own domain. We have registered and set up catholicroundup.com to point back to the blog at cc.ductapeguy.net . If you are already subscribed to the blog and podcast, there will be no immediate change, but you have to admit that catholicroundup.com is a much more memorable domain name.

Today is the fourth annual Blog Day where we are asked to list 5 blogs which may be of interest to our readers then link back to Blogday.org with your post.

Here from the Home Office in Bolsover, Ontario are five excellent Catholic Blogs in no particular order.

What Does The Prayer Really Say? Father Z. Blogs and podcasts about the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) and remaining faithful to the spiritual and liturgical roots of our faith.

Catholic Parish Media Liaison Kerry Madden walks a similar beat to myself, showcasing quality Catholic media for her parish of St. James Church and for anyone in the world reading her blog. She is also a regular contributor to Lisa Hendey’s Catholic Moments podcast.

Catholic in Film School Rebecca writes about being a young lady of faith, popular culture, and being a film student.

Luis’ Illustrated Blog Luis Escobar is an artist with a seriously cool job– a layout artist/storyboard artist on The Simpsons TV show and The Simpsons Movie. He blogs about faith, gaming, and his WAYCOOL job. His entries often include an illustration. His sister is a well known podcaster, Elsie Escobar aka YOGEEK

Musings from a Catholic Bookstore This is the official blog of Aquinas and More Catholic Goods, but it’s not your typical marketing blog but a wonderful addition to the conversation of Catholic blogging.

Sober Catholic Paulcoholic blogs about how he uses a 12 step recovery program and his Catholic faith to recover from addiction and grow in his faith.

Those are my picks. Yes, I know there are more than 5. Join the conversation and share some of your favorite Catholic blogs. You can write them on your own blog and tag it BlogDay2008 or send me some feedback on the blog at http://cc.ductapeguy.net by email at (catholicroundup@gmail.com) catholicroundup (at) gmail (dot) com or by calling 206-337-0611.

Welcome to Episode 1 of the Catholic New Media Roundup. For a while, I have been pondering and planning a podcast which would celebrate the best in Catholic New Media. Catholics all over the world are using computers and the new media tools to create amazing blogs, books, websites, videos, music and most of all community. It is my plan and hope to introduce bloggers, podcasters and others in Catholic new media and provide a place for promotion and celebration in this community.

The show begins with a social media introduction. I “met up” with of the Theotokos Podcast on Catholic social networking site 4marks.com.

After posting about 50 daily posts for my 40 Days of Catholic Media project, I thought I would take a couple days off before I got back to posting here. Well, it’s been 3 weeks and here I am. I originally started this blog as a way to explore the intersection between social media communities and faith communities. I am still very interested in questions of how one grows within a community and helps a community to grow.

A few weeks ago I drove down to a podcaster meetup in Toronto. During one of the lively discussions someone remarked that it was quite refreshing to be at a podcaster gathering now that most of the get rich quick, “How do I monetize podcasting?” crowd has drifted away. Katherine Matthews of the Purl Diving podcast commented that we should not be concerned with how we monetize our podcasts but how we communitize them. As an independent, DIY kind of guy and a proud hobbyist, this rang true for me.

As a participant in the Catholic blogging and podcasting communities I feel that we are in the early days of a new way to share and grow faith communities using modern social media tools. Over the next while on this blog I’m going to continue to link to wonderful Catholic media and explore other ways to communitize what we are doing here.

You can hear some of the discussion from the Toronto Podcaster meetup on the Canadian Podcast Buffet Episode 99 and on Hot Fossils and Rebel Matters 137.

I have always been reticent about making a public witness to my faith, preferring to let my actions and my character be a witness to my faith. (I still think this is the best witness).

Over the past couple years, by participating in the online community around Rosary Army and Catholic podcasting, and with this blog and podcast, I’m becoming more comfortable sharing my faith in public.

Yesterday, we had 2 bishops preside over Easter Mass at our parish as part of the opening ceremonies for the pilgrimage of the Ark of the New covenant (see yesterday’s post for more information on that). A reporter from AChannel, the local TV station out of Barrie was there to report on the service and the pilgrimage. After mass, she asked me to explain the significance of Easter. I gave it my best shot. You can see the video on the AChannel site.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of my home Parish of St. Margaret’s. Today on Easter Sunday we are hosting the Pilgrimage of The Ark of the New Covenant which is on a walking pilgrimage from the Canadian Martyr’s Shrine to The International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec City in June. There will be an Easter mass concelebrated by Auxilliary Bishops from Toronto and Quebec City, followed by a walking pilgrimage about 7 miles to the Canadian Martyr’s shrine. It will be a very special celebration for our parish. The Eucharistic Congress has a wonderful website and there is ongoing coverage of the pilgrimage and the congress at ECDQ.tv, the new media portal fro the diocese of Quebec. This diocese is doing exciting things with blogs, audio and video on the net to spread the good news. Unfortunately for me, most of the media is in French but it is still an amazing example of what a local diocese can do with new media tools.

I hope to post pictures, and maybe interviews of the event over the next few days.

1000 km on foot to Quebec City for the International Eucharistic Congress

The 2008 International Eucharistic Congress invites all media, as well as the public, to join in launching the final pilgrimage of the Ark of the New Covenant. A dozen “portageurs” will begin the 1000 km pilgrimage on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 in Midland, Ontario. The pilgrimage will take them to Quebec City in preparation for the most important religious celebration during the city’s 400th anniversary, the 49th International Eucharistic Congress.

All those interested are cordially invited to join the “portageurs” (those following the Ark) on Easter day. A Eucharistic celebration will take place at St. Margaret Church in Midland, ON, where the Ark’s pilgrimage will start towards the Canadian Martyrs’ Shrine. Once this 5.5 km distance will be covered, there will be a blessing with the relics of the Martyrs in memory of the first Jesuits.

Following is the detailed schedule of activities for Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 in Midland, Ontario:

10:30 a.m. – Arrival of the portageurs and the Ark of the New Covenant at St. Margaret Church, Midland, ON.

11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon – Easter Eucharistic celebration with Bishop Peter Hundt, Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of Toronto & Bishop Pierre-André Fournier, Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of Quebec at St. Margaret Church.

12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Lunch. All are invited to join the portageurs for their meal; however, lunch is not provided.

1:00 p.m. – Departure on foot from St. Margaret Church.

3:00 p.m. – Arrival at the Martyrs’ Shrine, Blessing and Departure Ceremony.

This historic pilgrimage enhances the liturgical Easter season and the foundation of the Church in Canada. The International Eucharistic Congress website at www.cei2008.ca will allow for people to follow the pilgrimage step by step. After a 64-day journey, the Ark will arrive in Quebec City May 25, 2008 for the Feast of Corpus Christi.

I open the podcast with Create In Me (http://www.k4communications.com/karl/downloads/createinme.mp3) (Psalm 51).
	* Reflection on K7 Days.

I am declaring the 7th, 17th and 27th of each month as K7 days. On a K7 day take 7 minutes to leave voice feedback for some of your favorite podcasts. You can also join the K7 Days (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9598642829&ref=mf) group on facebook.

	* Audio Feedback from Doug Mumphrey of The ManlyCatholic Podcast (http://manlycatholic.com/)

	* This week's Catholic Carnival is up at Mary's Aggies (http://marysaggies.blogspot.com/2008/03/holy-week-carnival.html). I'm looking forward to hosting the Easter blog carnival next week here on A Catholic Canadian.

	* Reflections on 40 Days of Catholic media and ideas for continuing this concept.

	* Popple (http://popple.us) God is Love (Prayer of St. Francis).

Remember, I can still be persuaded to release my interview with Kyle from Popple early. Just leave me comments on the blog, send email to ductapeguy at hotmail dot com or call my K7 voicemail number at 206-337-0611. Remember that K7 numbers are in the Seattle area code so normal long distance charges may apply.

I almost forgot to mention that both a Catholic Canadian and For the Sake of the Song are now available on Itunes.

I’m cross posting this with my other blog, For the Sake of the Song, so I apologize if you have read this twice.

I had a bit of a brainwave. Alot of podcasters use the free K7 voicemail service to receive voice comments. A drawback of the service is that like many free internet services, if you don’t use it for 30 days, you lose your K7 number. I also know that podcasters love to receive voice feedback, so I have a simple proposal:

I am declaring the 7th, 17th and 27th of each month as K7 days. On a K7 day take 7 minutes to leave voice feedback for some of your favorite podcasts.

In my feedback I may mention that it’s K7 day and ask the recipients to pass it on. It can be a kind of chain of good will, … and it will reset the counter for the recipient’s voicemail number.

If your like me, you’ve been meaning to respond to a few shows at any given time. On the K17th of March, try to reach out to other podcasters.

P.S. my K7 feedback number is 206-337-0611.

Remember that K7 numbers are in the Seattle area code so normal long distance charges may apply. I use SkypeOut, so I have almost unlimited North American calling.

Update: I set up a K7 Day group on facebook. Join the group and remember to add to the conversation by leaving a message for a podcaster on the K17th.

I surrender. 40 Days of Catholic Media is a podcast. When I started this project I deliberately didn’t call it a podcast. It was just a post a day that could contain text, pictures, audio or video– in short, a multimedia project. However people keep asking how they can subscribe to the “podcast” so here’s the deal. You can subscribe to the content on a Catholic Canadian in a two main ways.

Subscribe to All the Content posted on a Catholic Canadian (Great for RSS blog readers or Google Reader)

Subscribe to only the multimedia content: (The Podcast).
I haven’t added all the multimedia content to the podcast feed yet, but I’ll do that in the next day or so.

Finally, I’d love to have a conversation about the recurring themes on the 40 Days Project.

1) Catholic Music and Catholic Musicians. Who is your favorite? What’s your favorite Catholic song? Do you have a favorite Catholic musician whose music you would like to introduce to me?

2) Sacred Spaces Why is place so important to a person’s spiritual journey? Why are some places of more spiritual significance than others? What our some of your favorite ‘sacred spaces’.

3) The intersection of Social Media Community and Christian Community: How are you using social media tools to grow your Catholic community?, What podcasts, blogs and resources help you to participate in a Christian community both online and off?

4) (Probably the most important question) How are you taking time during Lent to enrich your spiritual life?

5) What’s with all those p alliterations?

popple, Popple, POPPLE. C’mon gang. If you want me to release the full 1/2 hour interview with Kyle Heimann of Popple, you’re going to have to let me know.

Send in comments on this blog, email me at ductapeguy.hotmail.com, send me tweets or message me on facebook, or record a voicemail message on my brand new K7 number at 206-337-0611. (This is a Seattle exchange. Normal long distance charges may apply if you are not in Seattle).

Popple are getting quite well known around the Catholic podosphere for their quirky, funny nerdy songs about life and faith. Kyle and I also talked about the importance of the season of Lent in our Catholic journey.

You can listen to that interview here.
I also play Calm Again from Popple’s CD Plaid. You can find Popple’s CDs at popple.us.

The whole 30 min interview on For the Sake of the Song is scheduled to release on April 20, BUT, if I get an overwhelming amount of requests in the comments here or on the For the Sake of the Song blog, or email to: ductapeguy AT hotmail DOT com, I might be persuaded to release it here on my 40 Days blog.
