Catholic Roundup 82- CNMC Wrapup

Play

In this show we give our impressions about the Catholic New Media Celebration in Boston earlier this month.
My take on CNMC: There is a welcome move toward professionalization of Catholic media.  We need high quality, engaging media– not boring media.  However, it is important not to discredit or diminish the value of the work done by passionate amateurs.  Remember that  GK Chesterton was a great champion of amateurs.  He said:  ”Anything worth doing is worth doing badly.

At time of this recording, Carson and Rebecca Weber were at the hospital delivering their 2nd daughter.  Carson is director of New Media Evangelization and Catechesis for the Catholic Church in Sacramento, CA.  He hosts the Understanding the Scriptures Podcast .
Victor and Marilyn Carvallo from Catholicland.com are grandparents:   Kelli & Joe’s Carvallo BABY Girl was BORN August 5.
CNMC Rosary:   During the CNMC, I asked various people to record the prayers and reflections on the mysteries of the rosary.    Listen closely to hear the voices of familiar/ and not so familiar bloggers, podcasters and people producing Catholic media.  I was honored to have Cardinal Seán O’Malley from the Archdiocese of Boston begin the rosary with the Apostles Creed.  Thanks to all who participated to make this rosary a special celebration of the online Catholic community.  There were approximately 68 people who contributed their voices to the rosary.   The full credits and the first set of mysteries, The Luminous Mysteries, are available here.  I will be releasing the other sets of mysteries weekly for the next 3 weeks.

Family Vacation as Pilgrimage

Blessed Kateri Shrine, Fonda, New York, Usa

Blessed Kateri Shrine, Fonda, New York, Usa

Last year one of the highlights of our family driving vacation to Boston was stopping at the the Shrine to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine in Fonda NY when we did not know it existed. You can hear more about that visit onCatholic New Media Roundup Episode 2 from last July.

This year we are spending two of our family camping weeks at Catholic Family retreats, first at Catholic Familyand in Bloomingdale, Ohio and later at Cana Colony at Madonna House in northern Ontario. We are certainly not alone in taking vacation time out to recharge our spiritual batteries and renew our faith.

There were over 140 families at Familyland the week we attended. The week at Familyland was structured with daily mass in the morning, followed by sessions for all members of the family until lunchtime. The afternoons were dedicated to sports, relaxation, watersliding, swimming and visiting with other families. At 3 pm each day, everyone in the whole complex stopped wherever they were to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Dinner was served between 5 and 7 and there were family activities and rosary time in the evenings. During each afternoon a number of priests were available on the lawn outside the chapel to hear confessions. The whole week was a wonderful balance of spiritual renewal and family fun.

While we were there, we met the Kearns family; Deacon Pat, Liz, Makenzie and Sean, from northern California who dedicated their month long circuit of the United States as a pilgrimage with daily mass and times for family rosaries. They documented their journey on the Kearns Family Pilgrimage USA blog.

This notion of traveling to renew one’s faith is not new. In fact it is very old. For thousands of years, Catholics have been making pilgrimages to holy places seeking healing or to grow in their faith. We are privileged to live quite near to the Shrine of the Canadian Martyrs, which is one such place of pilgrimage.

Catholic Roundup Big Question

How about you? Have you ever been on a pilgrimage? Have your family ever gone on a vacation/retreat? Do you take time during your vacation to recharge and enrich your spiritual life? Tell us about it. Send your responses to (catholicroundup@gmail.com) catholicroundup (at) gmail (dot) com or leave a voicemail message at 206-337-0611.

Building Community– One post at a time.

Update:  Wow, I submitted this post just before the deadline at 9:56pm EST.  By 10:30 Sarah had Catholic Carnival 200 posted, and it’s a doozer.

Congratulations to everyone involved for 200 weeks of the Catholic Carnival, (the longest permanent floating crap game Catholic Blog Carnival on the Internet).

Reflecting on what to write about for this week’s carnival led me to write a mini carnival of my own.  My involvement with Catholic blogging, podcasting and social media has been a means belonging to a community of believers throughout the world.  The reason I produce the  Catholic New Media Roundup is help foster and grow this community in my own little way.

A few recent posts illustrate this point.  A couple of weeks ago,  The Catholic Journeyman talked about the reasons he blogs in:Just how Catholic are we?

How “Catholic” are we to put study, energy and time into this, ahem “hobby”? I dont see this as fanatical or extreme, and yet my first inclination is to respond citing the convenience of this technology and using it for Evangelization, but thats just a thread in the cloth here. Its a discovery process, growing a community of believers, etc.

I have become a great fan of the Amateur Catholic Bloggers, The B team of Catholic Bloggers.  Their motto is, ” We don’t write books or do speaking tours.  In fact, we barely do our jobs. We’re the B-Team of Catholic Bloggers.”  Their sense of humor and the seriousness with which they undertake the (hobby? passion? addiction?) of sharing their faith using new media greatly speaks to me.  I’ll definitely be applying to join the B-Team.

On Catholic Moments #79 Lisa Hendey interviewed Bryan Murdaugh, a talented Catholic Dad, youth minister and musician, and social media friend of mine.  During the interview, Lisa asked Bryan why he uses social media to reach out to the youth he ministers to.   He gave a long and thoughtful answer, but summed it up with, “After all, the Eucharist is the original social network”.   Amen to that.

I’m trying to grow that social network of the body of Christ in my own little way through my blogs and podcasts.  Please consider contributing to my Catholic New Media Advent Calendar project which will feature content from a different guest blogger, podcaster or musician each day in December.

  1. This weeks Carnival was hosted by Joe Wetterling at Ho Kai Paulos :

    1. The theme of this week’s blog carnival -is “I love being Catholic!” It featured contributions from 13 Catholic Bloggers.
The carnival starts with a theme song “I like being a Catholic” which is an embedded video from a Catholic Video Sharing Site: called lovetobecatholic.com)
    2. What is there to love about being Catholic?
      We have Love.
Not cuddly, comfortable wuv, but real love – what C.S. Lewis once wrote “could easily be mistaken for ferocity”. Real, intense love leads us to the true meaning of worship.
      We have a mission.
“We are called to love. Called to give. Called to hope.” In fact we have The Mission, set for us by Christ, to make disciples of all the nations.
And from there, it needs to spread out at every moment. Being a part of the Body of Christ is not a part-time job. We are called to be All Christian, All the Time
We have help on that mission!
      We have a loving Mother.
Christ suffered for us, and Mary suffers with us. How can a mother not feel the pain of her children? And not reach out to help them when they need it?
And we have a loving and just Father.
God has every hair on our heads counted and keeps our best interests in mind, even when they aren’t how WE planned things. God loves us. We can count on that, even When Things Turn Out… Differently,
And our God is just, even when the meaning of that is hard to grasp.
    3. This week’s Catholic Carnival will be held at Organ-ic Chemist (http://musical-chemist.blogspot.com/). To enter is easy, just pick a post from your blog and email the information below to mariaefrancisco@gmail.com by 10:00 PM EST on Monday evening.

ark of the new covenant, pilgrimage

Yes folks, this is another of my posts riddled with p’s, and I’m not even mentioning Popple this time (oops– too late).

What I do have is pictures and a podcast from Easter Sunday when my daughter and I joined the Portageurs who are making a pilgrimage with the Ark of the New Covenant from Midland to Quebec City for the International Eucharistic Congress in June.

The music throughout the podcast is the Theme Song of the International Eucharistic Congress, God’s Gift.

You can follow the progress of the portageurs on their blog.

You can see media coverage of the pilgrimage in midland from AChannel Barrie, and on Salt and Light TV.

My daughter and I took lots of pictures. Here is an overview of the afternoon.

Day 42 of 40 Days of Catholic Media– with Father Bill Holtzinger

Play

For ten days in February, Fr. Bill Holtzinger led members of his parish from St. Anthony’s Church in Forest Grove Oregon on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We talked about his experiences on the pilgrimage and his Pilgrim Cast podcast.

In keeping with the truism that no podcaster produces just one show, here is a listing of Father Bill’s seven podcasts. You can find them all at frbill.org .
