Welcome to Episode 101 of the Catholic Roundup Podcast bringing you news and celebrations from the online community of Catholic podcasters, bloggers and musicians.

Shownotes:

1) Our condolences to Katherine and Mac Barron from the Catholic in a Small Town  podcast.  Last week, Katherine’s mother passed away after a long struggle with brain cancer.  Katherine shared the loving eulogy she gave at her mother’s funeral on the Catholic in a Small Town blog.  Our prayers go with their whole family.

2)  Congratulations to Mike and Beth Spellacy from the Secrets of Babylon 5 on SQPN and the Tightrope podcast, upon the arrival of their 5th child, a daughter named Joy.  Our daughter’s middle name is Joy and I hope you receive as much joy from your Joy as we have from our Joy.

3) Catholic musician, physician, and blogician, Russ Rentler and his wife Deborah celebrate the 8th anniversary of their return to the Catholic Church on April 30.  In honor of this occasion, they have posted a special podcast on their Crossed the Tiber blog.  This occasion also gives me the chance to play Russ’ song, The Way to Emmaeus– not that I need an excuse to play his music.

4)  This week the Crescat posted an amazing and personal blogpost entitled, Sometimes being Catholic is so very hard…, in which she reflects on how writing allows her to connect with other Catholics and challenges her to grow in her faith.  I feel the same way about podcasting.  Great Job Kat.

Catholic Roundup 99- Can you hack it?

Last week,  Domenico Bettinelli posted on Facebook that anybody with WordPress sites hosted on Dreamhost should run them through a Sucuri Site Check to see if your sites had been compromised.    Here is Dominic’s initial message.

Sucuri- Site Check

Sucuri- Latest Mass Compromise of WordPress sites – More Details

It turns out that 5 of my sites, including Catholic Roundup,  had been compromised by a PHP injection attack and were serving up random links to a malware site hosted in Russia.  After much googling, and several hours I was able to clean up and restore my WordPress sites.   Afterwords, Chris Weitzel from the Life on Fire Podcast gave me some suggestions for making your WordPress site more secure and suggested several plugins to help you manage your wordpress security.  I invited Chris on to the podcast to discuss how to make your website more secure.

Suggested WordPress Plugins to help make your site more secure:

My apologies for the problems with the audio recording.  The skype recorder I was using, ifree Skype Recorder  has begun to skip portions of audio.  I will be using another skype recorder in the future.

Our next show is episode 100 of the Catholic Roundup podcast.  If you would like to send us audio feedback or reflections for show 100, send it as an mp3 email attachment to catholicroundup@gmail.com.

Podcamp Toronto Special Edition: I Quit!!! Maybe…

Play

by SonnyandSandy on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/sonnyandsandy/461213609/

On February 25, I gave a presentation at Podcamp Toronto entitled, “I Quit- Maybe“.  I wanted to discuss the phenomenon of Podfading and how the experience of podcasting changes for people who have been doing it for a number of years.  I did not have a slide deck or even a clear agenda.  I did have just a few notes on a mind map prepared last night.  One of the participants asked me to post them so here they are.

The talk developed into a wide ranging discussion among several veteran Canadian podcasters including Bob Goyetche, Scarborough Dude, Dave Delaney, Bill Deys, Will Spaetzel, Ninja, Sylvain Grandmaison and several others.  A recording of the session is posted above.

As a Catholic podcaster and one who has seen many, many Catholic blogs and podcasts come and go, I am also interested in the faith and ministry aspects of Catholic New Media.  Does the fact that people producing faith based new media are often doing it with a spirit of ministry or vocation make any difference to the phenomenon of podfading?  Just wondering.

Note:  This was a heartfelt discussion among many of the participants and there is one or two instances of strong language in the discussion.

Today is The SECOND (Great) Canadian National Day of Podcasting.  I thought I would take the opportunity to come up from the land of the podfaded and explain that the Catholic Roundup is on extended hiatus and we won’t be doing a Catholic New Media Advent Calendar this year.  Enjoy the show.  I hope to produce others more frequently than quarterly but who knows…
